Hi, Can You Tell Us More About The Relationship Between Apollo And Hecate?
Hi, can you tell us more about the relationship between Apollo and Hecate?
Definitely! I find relationship between Apollo and Hecate to one of the most interesting things I’ve come across.
In short, Apollo and Hecate are counterparts. This is indicated in their names, their functions and also in the way They are related through their parents. A fragment from Hesoid’s work says that Apollo and Hecate are the parents of Scylla. I’ll be talking a little outside the mythology as well, so if you’re not interested in that, you can skip to the last part, where I’ll include mythology.
Hecate is the female equivalent of Hecatos, an epithet of Apollo. Both mean ‘working from afar’ - and this probably points to Apollo as an archer and Hecate as a witch. Alternatively, Hecate also means ‘the shining one’, which is equivalent to Phoibos, the epithet of Apollo which means the same. Both the divinities share two more common epithets, ‘Soter’ and ‘Soteira’, which mean ‘saviour’; and 'Kourotrophos’, meaning 'nursing, protecting the young’.
Apollo and Hecate are cousins, since their mothers, Leto and Asteria are sisters. Something interesting that we come across while studying the family tree is that Hecate was very often equated with Artemis. Euripides even says that Hecate is the daughter of Leto. Adding to this, Artemis and Hecate shared common epithets like 'Phosphoros’, 'Phraea’, 'Angelos’ by which She was either identified with Artemis or was merged with Artemis. This also explains why Hecate has the epithet 'Kourotrophos’ which more commonly belongs to Artemis (for She is the protector of children). Hecate appeared as Apollo’s companion first at Miletos, and then at Didyma as well. From this, many conclude that Hecate is the predecessor of Artemis; it was Apollo and Hecate who were originally paired, and that Artemis later came to replace Hecate.
The connection between Apollo and Hecate is the strongest when it comes to their roles and functions. They are both oracular divinities.
While Leto and Apollo presided over the prophetic powers of light and heaven, Asteria and Hecate took over the prophetic powers of dark and chthonic world.
An equally important role of both Apollo and Hecate is guarding the doors. They’re both invoked to guard over the doors and protect the house.
Both the Gods watch over the cycle of birth and death - Apollo, by bringing summer and winter, Hecate, by guiding the souls to rebirth. Consequently, both are the guardians of tombs. (I’ve talked about chthonic nature of Apollo and his association with death, if you’re interested).
As the goddess of magic & witchcraft, Hecate is seen as the goddess who can control the mist & create illusions through maigc. Even though Apollo not described to have any official association with mist, he is seen to be using it many times during the Trojan war. He uses mist to cover Hector, Glaucas and even to create a hologram of Aeneas.
Hecate as a mystic divinity, was associated with Apollo and the Muses.
They both have the element of fire connected to them.
This is all I could find. All the connections between Apollo and Hecate which were worshiped began diminishing with the increased worship of Artemis and subsequent replacement of Hecate by Artemis (or merging of both the goddesses).

will never forget how percy was at camp halfblood and everyone in the room was dyslexic and knew he was dyslexic and they still made this boy read out the great prophecy in front of the whole class, a prophecy that at least two people in the room knew by heart, and they let him stand there and say "a half-blood of the eldest dogs." they set him up so bad.
