I’m sorry but calling the black characters boring just because you over analyze and draw out intricate narratives for team green doesn’t mean they’re actually boring characters
I’m not over analyzing, I don’t think. I don’t think team black is boring either. I think the show has failed team black. I’m team black. You’re just making up stuff about me without actually paying attention to what I’ve been saying. That’s a pretty bad faith reading of my post. I was criticizing the show for not allowing team black to have as many character establishing scenes and moments of humor and tenderness but you’ll also see that I praised the scene where Jace and Rhaenyra cry together and the way Jace held up Joffrey at the funeral. I’m posting about it because I DON’T find team black boring; I just think the show specifically had failed to establish them as interesting characters. Even my parents, who have never read the books and don’t participate in fandom or any sort of analysis, prefer the blacks because they believe in Rhaenyra’s claim but that the greens have been developed better.
If you disagree and believe that the show has been fair to team black in establishing character, I’m happy to hear about it! I think Daemon has had a fair amount of character-establishing scenes (like returning from the stepstones with the driftwood crown or placing Viserys’s crown on his head, the latter of which was one of the best scenes in the show) and they started off strong with Rhaenyra but they gave my girl one line in the season 2 premiere. But I just think the development of Jace, Luc, Baela, and Rhaena has been absolutely heinous compared to what we’ve been given for Aegon, Aemond, and Helaena, especially the latter two. And I do think misogyny and racism play a role in it.
I do think giving Rhaenyra only one line could have worked if she’d had a stronger presence. Like I said, the scene where she embraces Jace was really good and I did think the scene where she found Arrax’s wing was well-done and touching. But as one of the central characters, I just want more for her. She’s grieving and she’s vengeful. Obviously. But there’s just something missing to me. Like, look at the scene with Alicent in the bath. Washing one’s hands is a classic obvious metaphor for washing away guilt. She gets overwhelmed as she’s being scrubbed and gets snappy, demanding to be left alone. She feels guilty but she knows it cannot be scrubbed away. This makes her overwhelmed, and angry. It was a lovely scene for establishing character that perfectly embodies show-don’t-tell. We don’t need to be told how Alicent feels.
Contrast this with Rhaenyra’s scenes from that episode. I honestly think that Rhaenys explaining that she needed to see physical evidence to accept that her child was gone did a great disservice to the scene. Rhaenys didn’t need to tell the audience how Rhaenyra was feeling. It took away a feeling of depth and complexity to have it stated out loud like that. That time could’ve been used to establish more character for Rhaenys. She could’ve gone inside and pulled out something that belonged to Laena (a burned piece of jewelry maybe) and something that belonged to Laenor, connecting the way she feels with the way Rhaenyra feels without telling the audience. Then she could’ve had a tender moment with the kids. When you have a character directly spelling out how a character feels like that, it can make the emotional beats ring hollow.
It’s like they have different writers for TG scenes and TB scenes I swear.
Howwwww does anyone think the show runners prefer TB tell meeeeee. Just look at the interesting character beats the greens get. Look at Aegon beaming watching Jaehaerys playing at the small council meeting vs Jace’s stiff scene in the north and the stiff dialogue between Rhaenys and Daemon and tell me the show runners prefer TB
