There was a strength in knowing things that Milli had forgotten. Of course she knew how to build a rifle...but being competent at firing one was a new thing. It was easy -- even gratifying -- to get up early to practice with rifle and pistols each morning. It was slow, but she was becoming the woman she wanted to be.

She knew she wouldn't have to hold Tia's hand. The woman was far too strong for that. But Milli wanted to hold her hand anyway, not to help Tia through the pain, but so that when Tia remembered getting the tattoo, it would always be coupled with the feeling of a loved one's hand holding hers.

She looked again at the little drawing in her sketchbook. It was silly and she had no reason to think about rings, but the idea of interconnecting gears and bars of teeth was an interesting one. Milli scribbled For fun later in the margins and closed the book, never really intending to look at the drawing again.
