The popular idea of Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal is just ever so slightly incorrect, but the distinction makes a difference in my opinion.

The way people usually present it is that the Proposal is "the hungry should eat their children", and that's not what Swift proposes at all.

What he instead proposes is that the poor should sell their children to the rich, and that the rich should eat the poor children, and the proceeds would lift the poor out of poverty.

The popular idea misses the theme of "rich people are bastards and only help the less fortunate if there's something in it for them" and the comparison between the proposal and the reality of child labour in the leadup to the Industrial Revolution.

a comic.3 soldiers in green uniforms walk into a village@sunset.1soldier says,man,this town is a dump. the 2nd soldier replies,yeah,thats why we're here, stupid.if this place wasn't so out-of-the-way,
we'd've noticed this hole thing ages ago.the3rd soldier knocks on the door;a 30-year-old woman with brown skin&dark hair opens it&says,do u need something?the soldier replies, only a moment
of your time.we've herd rumors about an earthbender with an unusual talent in this area.do u happen to no anything about such a person?she swallows&says, the people who live a few houses
down have a cousin who's a metalbender.soldier replies,metalbenders are hardly rare nowadays.i was thinking something a little more unique.she says,like what?he says,like lavabending.
her eyes widen but then she laughs&says, lavabending?i'm afraid i can't help u with that.the only lavabender i know of is a middleaged bald guy with an arrow on his head who lives all the
way in republic city. maybe check there. the soldiers leave.the woman slams the door shut, suddenly looking terrified.she thinks:this is bad.who even saw him?something tells me that whoever
those soldiers work for,he's not the type to let something rare&powerful slip through his fingers.there are drawings of a ring-covered hand, uniformed soldiers,&a combustion-bending girl in ⛓.
the woman thinks,so what do i do?then ghazan, looking about 14 years old, says, rahma?who was that at the door?rahma, the woman,says,ghazan,listen2me,little brother.home isn't safe anymore.
pack your things.i'm getting u out of here tonight.she says this with a serious expression while placing a hand on ghazan's shoulder.ghazan looks bewildered.

I wish i could find this one article written in I believe the 90’s that went under the radar on abortion. The author said that the “life” arguments are basically useless on either side and what actually matters is that humans shouldn’t have a right to use other human bodies as a resource without consent no matter how alive or sentient they are, even if they’re on the brink of death you have the right to deny them access to you. It probably was too radical for pro-choice activists back in those days but like…that’s the most robust arguement lol so we need 2 being that back and dead the pontifications and splitting hairs about “life” in my honest onion

Hot take but the nonsensical portrayal of the third world being entirely made of absolute destitution is an important propaganda element that keeps workers in the first world (Particularly the USA) complacent with a lifestyle that will literally kill them.Â
