Fr tho im glad someone finally pointed out how bad the writing of the subplot was like its such a plot device thinking of a doing a rewrite fanfic tbh I already started to do a rewrite but when I did the first rewrite I tried to keep the same ideas of the episodes and then I realized I don't think it works anyway if its gonna line up with the original

But like the white leverage stuff with topher and abe is supposed h a plot device and noone even believes topher likes Joan I can't tell if its bad writing on purpose or if its framed like that specifically

And its even framed as a plot device there's no bite to it jfk just kills his phone with his ass

Its also just insanely uncomfortable and I'm glad ppl are pointing out that even in the context of it in the show it does not work well at all

Like if he does it alot that makes it look like he's doing it for fun if he's doing it randomly Like he did he's obsessed with Abe and I think the liking Abe thing could work really well as a foil to Joan but also being alot different from Joan I think itd work really well in both fleshing the character out and showing he's a bad person because the crush is toxic but also it proves he'd never admit to being gay because he thinks of himself as a white knight and thats why I think the topher liking Abe thing would work really well writing wise

I think something that would help the show not tell on Topher being a bad person is if they made what he said to convince Abe he couldn't ask Joan out right away was more solid

Like "You can't go out with Joan as a virgin sleep with this specific person you don't want to sleep with" is a hard sell and yet Abe was like "You raise a good point" like right away?

If I'm suppose to believe there was any bite to Topher's action it should have been more like him telling Abe to ask Ms. Grumbles for advice knowing that she would try to make a move on him (this would add to the discomfort of the episode as well - but if I were to suggest reworking this episode to not be uncomfortable it'd be completely scrapped and traded for something entirely different)

I guess my problem is telling someone to sleep with someone else isn't tricking them into it. Like it's framed like Topher tricked Abe into something he didn't want to do with out having any real trickery occurring?? Like yeah don't suggest to your classmate that they should sleep with your teacher like ever but that doesn't fall into the total human garbage category really The only way I could see that working is they set up a pattern of Abe doing whatever Topher suggested in previous episodes, maybe showing Abe being insecure about losing his only sort of friend But like in the show evetime Topher gave Abe advice before this point Abe has not taken it - He didn't listen when Topher told him to watch his mouth in episode 1, he didn't listen when Topher said "hey don't go into the desert there's cannibals" in episode 7 and he didn't listen when Topher gave normal advice about giving Joan space earlier in episode 8

There just wasn't any pattern to build off of for what they did to work/make sense
