an; first of my david loki fics - i’ve missed writing for jake’s characters honestly. (don’t hate me lol!)

three knocks and you’re immediately opening the door, slightly out of breath with one hand lifted towards your ear. the other hand finally meets with it.

“come in,” you turn, walking towards the mirror that hangs from the wall by the door. you must’ve replaced the one he had broken when he slammed the door in a fury. “there’s some pizza in the oven if you haven’t ate - i know how you get.”

i know how you get.

its a sentence that has his chest heavy with nostalgia and hope because you remember how he gets so caught up in things, he forgets to eat until midnight, if that.

but he realizes, of course you remember. you both had been together for four years, married for three. you know him better than anyone because you’d actually took the time to learn him from inside out.

he took it for granted. and now he regrets it.

his eyes flicker down as your hand reaches for the other earring, slipping the back from the needle. they look strangely familiar - like they’re the ones he had gifted you for your anniversary - he says nothing. just shrugs off his jacket and finally nods when you give him a strange look for staying silent.

“okay. thanks. did phoebe already eat?”

your eyes roll and arms drop by your sides as you turn to him. “no. of course not. i ordered pizza and just shoved it in the oven without feeding her.”

“it was just a question.”

“of course i fed her. you shouldn’t even have to ask,” you rub at your forehead. “she only had one piece. she might want some more after she sees you eating some. bedtime is at ten. no later.”

“why not earlier?”

“it’s a weekend, david. not a weekday. weekday’s she goes to sleep at eight. i’m not a bad parent, if that’s what you’re thinking.” always feeling the scrutiny of others, it makes you defend yourself quickly from any judgement.

“i didn’t say you were.”

you simply give him a look before walking past him and into the living room where she sits with her blanket and in some comfortable pajamas, eyes casted on the television that plays scooby-doo. you plop next to her, smiling when she turns to look at you.

“you look pretty, mama.”

“thank you, lovebug. now remember, your bedtime is at ten, okay? if you get hungry again, let daddy know. he’ll get you another slice of pizza, no candy after brushing your teeth.”

rolling her eyes, her cold feet nudges at your thigh. you shiver and tuck the blanket under her feet before standing and pressing a series of kisses over her face - she smells of bubblegum shampoo and lavender lotion.

“i love you, lovebug.”

“i love you, mama. be safe.”

you smile and nod. “don’t give daddy a hard time.” you rub at her cheek softly before lifting at the waist and fixing your dress. you’re finally aware of david and were he leans against the doorframe, watching you both.

“alright. i gotta go.” you walk past him, grabbing the coat that hangs on the coatrack.

“he’s not picking you up?” you pull your hair from where it’s tapered down underneath the coat.

“no. he’s not. i didn’t feel comfortable giving my address out just yet,” turning, your brow lifts. but your eyes betray you and wander down to where his black thermal hugs at his biceps. “is that okay with you?” your eyes flicker back up to his face and you’re aware of how his lips stretch into a smirk.

cocky, you think.

“perfect by me,” he walks towards you and you stumble back slightly when he gets too close. his hand reaches out and wraps around the knob, pulling it open for you. he looks down at you, lips still pulled into a slight smirk. “have fun. but not too much.”

rolling your eyes, you grab your purse and keys, walking out and down the porch quickly. you glance over the roof of your car to see david leaning against the door now, one hand on his hip with a head tilted.

he gives you a little wave and wink.
