Back in March 2016, Gotham was renewed for a third season. The show was on its midseason break, but Fox gave it the greenlight anyway.

This year, not so much.

We’re already a few days into April and the show is set to return on April 24, but as of yet we have no word on a fourth season. Fox renewed Lucifer back in February as the show bowed for the midseason break. But Fox remained mum on sister-show Gotham’s future, begging the question: Should fans be worried?

Gotham has never been a ratings powerhouse, but it has provided decent numbers in its Monday night time slot ahead of Lucifer with an average of 3.5 million live viewers every week. While consistency is good, the lack of growth could prove troubling for the network as it decides whether or not to renew the show.

Gotham’s third season has seen the introduction of the Mad Hatter and the transformation of Edward Nygma into the Riddler. Bruce and Selina have been in a kinda sorta relationship while Jim Gordon has been working to stay out of trouble since killing Carmine Falcone’s son Mario while he and Gordon’s former girlfriend Lee were on their honeymoon. Of course, nothing has been as much fun as the return of Jerome Valeska as the young Joker in the three-part story leading up to the midseason break.

But is the return of Jerome enough to earn a fourth season?

Possibly. He is really fun to watch.

However, after the release of Suicide Squad, Gotham’s showrunners decided that they can’t wait to introduce Harley Quinn into the Gotham universe. She is reportedly scheduled to appear at the end of the third season, which would be a perfect springboard into a fourth season.

We still have lots of time to find out about a renewal, but it would be nice to wrap up season three knowing that it will segue into season 4.
