movies where someone hears an important message only once and retains all the details….

girl if that were me, we’d be fucked. I have to reread emails like 4 times.

Bucky: Sam asked me to be his fake date to his cousin’s wedding so he could avoid the usual “are you seeing someone” questions.

Kate: I’ve read enough fanfiction to know how this turns out.

In the whole debate about whether or not FanFic writers deserve comments, or should demand more comments (which is so fucking stupid, they deserve comments, full stop), something I always see brought up in the argument against the desire for comments is: "I write for myself, so I don't care about comments. If you're writing just for the validation of others then you shouldn't be a writer/you should get thicker skin."

Look.

I write for myself.

But I post my writing to connect with others.

If you were writing just for yourself you wouldn't be posting it online. Whether or not you're aware of it, if you're posting something it's because you want other people to see it or interact with it.

If you truly didn't care, you wouldn't be posting it or your blog would be private.

When fanfic writers ask for comments 9/10 it's respectfully, it's not a demand. I remember the days back on FF.net where "I'll only post the next chapter until I have x amount of comments!" was a regular thing, but that trend has definitely died down at this point.

At this point writers asking for comments is more the equivalent of a YouTuber saying "Don't forget to Like, Comment, and Subscribe!" at the end of every video, but are we vilifying YouTubers for saying that?

No, because it's the norm. It's the formula.

So I don't get why we treat writers the same way.

9/10 FanFic writers want comments not out of a desperate need for validation, but because we want to connect with the rest of the fandom, and writing is the best way we know how to do that. But it's a two-way street: we're putting ourselves out there via our fanfics, but the rest of the fandom has to meet us halfway by acknowledging our existence via Likes or Reblogs or (preferably) Comments.

Picture it as a School Cafeteria. FanFic writers posting our stories is like someone coming up to your table and asking if they can sit with you.

If you don't acknowledge us, we're going to think nobody wants us there and we'll leave.

And as more and more fanfic writers leave the fandom, going off to sit at a different table to stick with the metaphor, the fandom is going to dwindle and eventually become stagnant and die out.

Because FanFic writers and Fan Artists and Gif Makers, we're the ones who keep putting out new material and new stuff that keeps the fandom alive and active and keep people engaged and interested. We're the heart that keeps pumping the blood of fandom.

And all that we ask is for a comment or a Reblog if you like our stuff.

If you think that that's too much of a demand then you're going to see the fandom die.

We're doing this all for free, out of our own free time, out of a desire to belong to a community that we love and care about.

But if that community doesn't accept us by not acknowledging us or the hard work we put in, we're just going to leave.

We also desire comments and commentary on our fics because for most of us we're trying to improve our writing skills, and we can't do that unless we learn what we're doing well and where we need to improve. We can't get better unless other people tell us what they like and what they didn't.

It's like handing in your homework but never receiving a grade for it, and then the teacher getting annoyed when you ask what your grade is. Did we do well? Are we passing the class? Are we flunking? What did we get wrong? What areas do we need to work on?

Saying that fanfic writers shouldn't want comments or Reblogs on their fics is baffling to me, because would you say that published authors shouldn't demand to be paid for the novels that they put out? Would you expect them to hand out stories for free?

If not, then why TF do you expect fanfic writers to do the same?

The only difference is WE ARE giving out our stories for free! The only thing we ask for is a measly comment to acknowledge our hard work!

It's truly not that much of an ask.

Just comment on the damn fics already.
