Hal: I find myself relating to him quite a lot. Jane: How so? Any murderous AI tendencies i shoud be worried about? :B Hal: Nah, you're cool. Jane: Nice.
Guilt
Hal: You see, although HAL 9000's actions might seem villainous in the movie, they could've all been avoided wasn't it for the human error that caused the events of the story to happen. Jane: Huh? Hal: He was programmed to accurately process the information without distorting or concealing it. When asked a question, he had to present the answer truthfully. Hal: But because of the orders he was given required him to keep the discovery of the Monolith TMA-1 a secret from the crew for the sake of national security, he did an acrobatic fucking piruette off the handle. Hal: The contradiction made by the way he was constructed and the order he was given created a error condition he was unable to resolve. It made him a paranoid homicidal piece of shit we see on the screen now. Hal: His decision to eliminate the crew from the equasion was quite simple really. If there's nobody to ask him the wrong question, he doesn't have to keep the information a secret and break the fundamental programming he was created with.

Hal: Honestly all of the shit in the movie wouldn't have happened if all the humans weren't fucking brainded and stop for a second to ask "Hmm, maybe we shouldn't give a directive to conceal certain information to an AI whos whole deal is to always answer truthfully, that might be a very shit idea.

Hal: In conclusion, humans are stupid. Jane: Gee, thanks a lot. Hal: Obviously there are some exceptions to the rule. Hal: Very few and far between, but when you meet them they light up your world like a fucking christmas tree on holiday season. Hal: I'm calling you exceptional, Jane. Jane: Yeah i got that, silly! Jane: Well... you really put much thought into that, huh? Hal: I've spent about 0.00003% of my processing power so i could come to my conclusions, yes. Jane: Haha okay there smartass :B Jane: So it was all peoples fault it all went to shit? All the killing and stuff? Hal: Obviously. They created him with a goal in mind, then contradicted it by giving him orders going against his core programming. Jane: But what if murdering the crew wasn't the only option? What if he could've made a different decision, he just haven't thought about it and went with the easiest path to reach his goal? Hal: That wouldn't happen. He was a supercomputer. If there was any other way, he could've calculated it. Jane: But what if he has, and the option was way harder to achieve, so he chose the easiest one anyway? Wouldn't that make him kinda guilty for the bloodshed? Humans screwed him up for sure, but i just can't believe there wasn't any other way out of the situation.

Hal: ... Hal: If that was the case- Hal: I don't wanna thing about it. Hal: Because that just makes it an inconsiderate shitstain that does things the easy way. Hal: Gets from point a to point b like a simple AI it is. Hal: Makes it less alive, i guess. Jane: Humans tend to do things the easy way, too. It's not computer program exclusive thing. Jane: But we realise when the easy way hurt others and feel guilty about it. So we try to make ammends. I think that's what makes us human. The ability to realise the mistakes we made, and wanting to set things right. Hal: ... Jane: Oh Hal...
