actually i'd love to hear your elaborated thoughts on sam wildman and seven, sounds very compelling frankly
(In reference to this answer)
I think Sam Wildman/Seven is one of those ships that came up more often years ago, but it always interested me, partly as a way to correct one of Voyager's oversights—why do Seven and Sam only interact on screen once (in “Mortal Coil” I think) but then never again, especially after Seven and Naomi start hanging out? You'd think that Sam would have a long talk with Seven on how she expect Seven to interact with Naomi and lay down a few firm rules. And the show hints at the fact that that has actually happened at some point! Here's a line from “Survival Instinct”:
I don't think Seven would say this if Sam hadn't warned her against teaching Naomi “Borg stuff” (and Seven, at least by early season 6, agrees with Sam too—her next lines are “I don't approve either. We've discussed the impropriety of you emulating the Borg.”) So I've personally always been interested in thinking about how those interactions between them could have gone.
It's particularly notable to me that Sam lets Seven be around Naomi so much, despite their one interaction being a complete disaster and Sam obviously being aware that Seven is dangerous. At the very least Seven is unused to being around people, least of all young children. Hell the first time Seven and Naomi truly hang out is when Seven was not herself for Borg crap reasons in “Infinite Regress”! So Sam's motivations for letting this go on anyway really interest me. I suppose on one hand it was difficult to curb Naomi's enthusiasm (especially right after Sam almost died far away from her in “Once Upon A Time”) but on the other it's not that hard to jump to the conclusion that Sam herself kinda likes Seven despite the fact that (or maybe because) she's so odd. We don't know much about Samantha Wildman but I figure she's a lot tougher and a lot more unflappable than the show overtly says, given everything that's happened to her since boarding Voyager.
And I think Seven respects Sam in return. I don't have much to go on to (again, Voyager gives us very little here), but she does seem to follow some rules, rules she agreed to and sees the wisdom of, with Naomi. I always wondered if Sam telling her straight up what her expectation and boundaries are re: Seven interacting with Naomi wasn't actually... refreshingly direct, compared to all the other relationships Seven has on the ship which are confusing at best, and often without clear boundaries (just think of the Doctor and the Captain). I think Seven could really appreciate having ground rules she can follow when interacting with others, especially someone as unpredictable as a young girl. Ultimately I think Seven might like Sam because she gets along so well with Naomi, but maybe there's true regard for Sam as well.
So I think there is something implied here and then you have this single parent situation plus the difficult, traumatized adult that the little kid has decided she will befriend no matter what... The trope writes itself. Seven realizing that it's so much easier to be around Sam and talking about niche work subjects (Sam is a xenobiologist)... The angst about Greskrendtregk being far away and Naomi never having even met him and thinking of Seven as the other adult she looks up to... Idk I think there's a lot here to work with!!
Messaging people for the first time is so hard. What am I supposed to say? Like, "You seem really odd and your blog intrigues me. Do you want to have philosophical conversations or perhaps talk about fictional characters?" What! Whatever. I will just follow you back and stare at your blog with my big beautiful brown eyes.
